Dr. Childs' Comments

I spent five years (1972-1976) as a graduate student in Japan, during which time I travelled around most of the Japanese islands. The Japanese images cover a range of physical and urban landscapes, agriculture, seasonal climatic change, cultural festivals and everyday life.

From 1979-1984 I lived in Hawaii where I was a graduate grantee of the East-West Center and pursued a Ph.D. in geography at the University of Hawaii. The Hawaiian images cover physical and urban landscapes of the five major Hawaiian islands, especially volcanic features, traditional Hawaiian agriculture and culture. The images of the Western USA were also taken during this time and feature some of the famous national parks in that region.

As a resident of Brisbane, the Australian and New Zealand images were collected while working and travelling in various regions.
